Do you have low traffic to your website?
If you answered "yes" I can assure you it's because you are not getting found high enough in the rankings at Google and the other search engines for important keywords. I know that seems obvious but sometimes the things in front of our nose that are the most difficult to see. Traffic to your website is proportional to your rankings. Backlinks cause better rankings.
Algorithms (math formulas) put together by Google and also by the other search engines, determine the rankings. It is important to know that these rankings are assigned for every single page on your site. That means Google knows whenever a page is added to any website and initially must decide where to place it in the index.
So if you have a twenty page website each page will have a different ranking base on a gargantuan number crunching by very sophisticated mathematical formula neither you nor I could or need to understand.
Just know this, every page has a ranking. Each ranking on each page is different for different keywords. The rankings can change based new information these mathematical formulas detect such as a trend showing backlinks from other sites and a pattern of fresh content.
In other words rankings are a process and a moving target. Rankings go up for certain pages and down for certain pages. Sometimes a given page will have a high ranking for a particular search term. That same page will have a lower ranking for another search term.
All websites have rankings but do you know which page on your site is most important? Its one thing to understand the need for backlinks yet, not every page needs a high ranking.
For example, one customer recently had all backlinks pointing only to the home page. To be sure, that is not necessarily a mistake. For example an attorney, doctor, accountants and other professionals would want more traffic to the home page of the site in order to acquaint visitors about the services, so they can call or email, then a link to the home page would be fine.
But if you are a marketer of a specific item, or several items, who has gone to the trouble of preparing professionally written, feature length product reviews with colorful pictures you want to have the link pointing to the product page on your website because that is the revenue producing product page.
I see this mistake all the time and there are so many different types of website applications for as many different types of businesses. I realize that so many small business folks simply do not have enough time to do the research for this critical function. When that is the case, let a professional do this business so you can take care of your business. It is called Outsourcing.
